GLYFADA SUN - Jeddah
The Glyfada Sun, a bulk carrier that met its end in 1983, isn’t about depth, it’s about accessibility and a unique window into the Red Sea’s ability to reclaim. We’re talking about a wreck where the bow actually breaks the surface, sitting in a mere two metres of water. We love it because it's a stark, almost sculptural reminder of maritime history, perfectly positioned for snorkelers, freedivers, and even just those looking for a paddle. Below the waterline, the stern stretches out, still mostly intact and home to surprising amounts of life given the shallow depth. You’ll find schools of juvenile fusiliers darting through the rusted superstructure, and we’ve often spotted parrotfish grazing on algae right off the hull. Visibility here is usually good, but we’d suggest going in the morning before any wind picks up, which can stir the sand. It’s a great spot for honing your underwater photography, especially macro, with plenty of nooks and crannies for nudibranchs and small anemones to take hold. Don’t expect deep penetration or dramatic drop-offs; this is a place to slow down, float over the history, and really observe the small wonders.
