CHATA CONSTITUCION - Mar del Plata

Forget what you think you know about wrecks. The Chata Constitución, right off Mar del Plata, is one of those spots that just sticks with you, even though it’s barely deeper than a bathtub. It’s a dangerous wreck, sure, but dangerous in the sense that you might get lost in how much history is packed into its mangled steel, not because of depth. This isn't a deep dive. It’s a snorkel, a free dive, an excuse to spend an hour floating over something genuinely cool. We love dropping in on a calm day, the sun catching the barnacle-covered hull, sending shimmers through the metre of water. You can trace the outline of the old flat-bottomed boat, imagining the sand and gravel it used to carry, now home to clouds of small fish darting in and out of the rusted plating. It’s a shallow grave, but a lively one. Our favourite part is looking down into the open holds, seeing how the light plays on the broken ribs of the ship, creating natural hideouts for crabs and small gobies. It’s a perfect spot for photographers wanting to capture something different, or for anyone who appreciates a piece of maritime history that’s literally at your fingertips. Just pick a day with no swell; it makes all the difference.
