DONATELLO - Mar del Plata

Alright, let's talk about the Donatello. You’ll find this one just off Mar del Plata, and it’s a bit of a local legend. What we love about it is how accessible it is – literally 1m deep. Seriously, you can practically walk to it at low tide, which makes it perfect for a snorkel or even just a paddle with a mask. The Donatello itself is the remains of an old fishing trawler, and while it's classified as "dangerous" in some books, that’s mostly because it’s a genuine shipwreck, not some artificially sunk dive park piece. It’s breaking up, slowly, which means new nooks and crannies appear with every big storm. We’ve seen small schools of pejerrey darting through the rusted ribs, and surprisingly colourful anemones clinging to the metal. It’s not about huge pelagics here; it's about the intricate little world that develops on something man-made. Our favourite time to visit is on a calm morning, just after sunrise. The light filters through the shallow water and makes the entire wreck glow a dull bronze. If you're looking for an easy, fascinating glimpse into a historical wreck and its unassuming residents, this is it. It’s not a deep blue adventure, but it’s real, and it's right there.
