FRIGORIFICO GUALEGUAYCHU NO 1 - Mar del Plata

The Frigorífico Gualeguaychú No 1 is our kind of wreck. Not just because it’s a proper piece of history, sunk in a fog-bound collision back in '84, but because it’s shallow. At a consistent 7 metres, you get fantastic bottom time to really poke around. We love how the wreck is a jumble of metal, ripped apart by the collision and the years since, not some perfectly preserved museum piece. You'll spend your dive weaving through crumpled steel plates and the remains of the superstructure. It’s a proper metal playground. Keep an eye out for the big conger eels that have made homes in the darkest nooks, and we’ve often seen shoals of silversides shimmering around the hull. The visibility can be variable here – it's Mar del Plata, after all – but even on a greener day, the wreck’s presence is undeniable, looming out of the murk. It’s perfect for anyone keen on wreck diving without the depth.
