GUAYACAN - Mar del Plata

Forget everything you thought you knew about wreck diving. Guayacan isn’t deep, barely two metres at high tide, but it’s a site that demands your full attention. This isn't some pristine hull waiting to be admired; it’s a skeletal remains of a fishing trawler, pounded by the Atlantic, its ribs splayed open. We love how the shallow depth and the constant surge turn it into a dynamic, living sculpture. You'll feel the push and pull of the ocean, truly a visceral dive. What makes it standout, for us, is the sheer resilience of life here. The exposed metalwork acts as a perfect substrate for sea anemones, their tentacles waving in the current like miniature flags. Schools of silversides shimmer through the gaps, darting in and out of the rusted frame. Look closely, and you might spot tiny crabs scuttling amongst the barnacles. It's a fantastic spot for photographers looking to capture the interplay of light and shadow, or for newer divers keen to experience a wreck without the depth. Our favourite way to dive it is on a calm morning, just after sunrise, when the light plays through the surface swell and illuminates the wreck from above. It feels less like a dive, more like an archaeological exploration.
