MARTA MARIA C - Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata’s coastline might be better known for its beaches, but just off Playa Varese lies the Marta Maria C, a wreck that genuinely surprises. We love this site for its accessibility and the way it’s become an artificial reef in such shallow water – only 4m deep. It’s a fishing trawler, sunk years ago, and even though it’s broken up, the structure still offers plenty to explore. Dive down and you’re immediately enveloped by schools of pejerrey, the local silversides, darting around the rusted hull. Inside, if you fin gently, you'll spot crabs scuttling over the framework and juvenile fish taking shelter. The light filters through the waves, giving the whole scene a moody, almost melancholic feel. It’s not a big wreck, but it’s fascinating for macro life and photography, especially on a calm day when visibility pushes past 5m. Our pick for a relaxed afternoon dive, perfect for newer divers or anyone wanting to practice their wreck skills without the deep-water pressure. Just be mindful of fishing lines, a common hazard around Mar del Plata’s inshore sites.
