Ponton Indio - Mar del Plata

Alright, so you’re in Mar del Plata and looking for something a bit different? Forget the big showy wrecks, Ponton Indio is all about character. We love this site because it’s a peek into local history, right there in the harbour. At a shallow 6 metres, it's pretty much a guaranteed dive, and one we find perfect for an afternoon exploration. The Ponton Indio itself isn’t some massive freighter. It’s a old floating crane, sunk back in the 1930s, and it feels like stepping back in time. You can still make out the superstructure, some of the crane mechanisms, all encrusted with growth now. We particularly enjoy poking around the various nooks and crannies, imagining the stories it holds. Light filters through the water, illuminating schools of small silversides darting between the metalwork. Look closely and you’ll spot crabs scuttling amongst the debris, and we’ve often seen blennies peering out from crevices. Visibility can be a bit variable, as you’d expect in a busy port, but we find the best conditions are usually on an incoming tide. It’s not a deep dive, so bottom time is generous, letting you really soak in the atmosphere. We’d suggest this dive for anyone who enjoys history, macro life, and a relaxed pace. It’s a gentle introduction to wreck diving, very forgiving, and utterly charming.
