REINA S. - Mar del Plata

The Reina S. is probably our favourite wreck in Mar del Plata for a quick dip. It’s barely a dive, really, more of a snorkel, but don't let the 3-meter depth fool you. This isn't about chasing pelagics or spotting rare nudibranchs; it's about history you can touch and a unique perspective on a city's past. The Reina S. was an old fishing trawler, sunk deliberately in 1952. What’s left of her sits right off the coast, just north of the port. You’ll find the bow and stern mostly intact, with the midship section well broken down. We love gliding over the exposed ribs and imagining the deckhands working these very same timbers. The visibility can be hit or miss here, particularly after a strong southerly wind, but on a calm day, the sun streams right through the shallow water, illuminating the hull's details. It's an easy dive, perfect for new divers or even just a quick snorkel if you’re itching to get wet. You won’t see huge schools of fish, but plenty of small crabs scuttle through the nooks and crannies, and we’ve spotted small octopus tucked away in the darker corners of the collapsed sections. We’d suggest going at high tide; it gives you a little more water over the wreck, making it easier to fin around without stirring up the bottom.
