Pico da Coroa - Arraial do Cabo

Pico da Coroa. Ah, Pico da Coroa. This spot near Arraial do Cabo has become one of our go-to dives when we’re in Brazil, and for good reason. It’s a pinnacle, basically a big rock column rising from the seabed, and it just demands you drop in. We love the feeling of descending into the blue and seeing that dark shape emerge beneath you, slowly resolving into a reef teeming with activity. You’re pretty much guaranteed to be enveloped by schools of herring and pollock here. Not just a few, but proper walls of silver that split and reform as you swim through them. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too, like the Delalande Blenny peeking out from crevices, and those striking Brazilian red anemones. We’ve had some fantastic encounters with Atlantic Yellow Cowries slowly making their way across the rock. The southern right whales are a seasonal treat, usually August to October, and if you’re lucky enough to be in the water then, hearing their calls echoing around is an experience you won't forget. It’s a dive that rewards a slow pace, letting the schools swirl around you. We always suggest going a bit later in the morning to avoid the earliest boats; it can get busy, but it's worth it.
