Kebo Iwa - Lombok & Gili Islands

Kebo Iwa is one of our favourites for a reason. This isn’t just a pile of metal, it’s a properly atmospheric wreck, the remains of a speed boat sunk by local fishermen during the 1965 political unrest. Dropping down to 27 metres, you’ll find it largely intact, lying on its starboard side, perfect for a swim-through if you’re comfortable with your buoyancy. We love picking out details from its former life, like the captain’s chair still surprisingly in place, or the console covered in soft corals. Around the wreck, the local reef fish have really made a home. You’ll often spot massive schools of snapper hanging off the bow, and a few grumpy-looking moray eels peeking out from under the hull. The visibility can be a bit variable here, so we’d suggest going in the morning before the thermoclines kick in. It’s a site that rewards patience, not a frantic swim-through, so take your time and soak it all in.
