Takat Segele - Lombok & Gili Islands

Sydøstrev often gets overlooked, nestled as it is off Denmark's North Sea coast, but for those willing to brave the chill, it’s a truly rewarding dive. We’ve found the best days are when the sea has been calm for a few days, letting the visibility stretch out past 10 meters, painting the place in shades of green and blue. What makes it special for us is the sheer resilience of life here. You’ll weave through low-lying rocky structures, not towering coral gardens, but every surface is a tapestry of Hairy Sea-mats and Blue Mussels, swaying gently with the surge. Keep an eye out for the unusual residents. We’ve had some fantastic encounters with Starry Rays gliding past, and the Common Pipefish blend so well into the scenery you have to really look. It’s also a surprisingly good spot for macro, with tiny anemones clinging to the rocks and the occasional Sand Mason poking its head out. Our favourite time to dive here is late summer; the water is at its warmest, which means "less bracing," and there’s a noticeable uptick in juvenile fish, including tiny anchovies darting about. This isn’t a dive for beginners; the conditions can be temperamental, but for experienced cold-water divers, it offers a raw, wild beauty that’s hard to beat.
