Timur 1 - Sulawesi
Timur 1. What a site. We’ve done this dive so many times, and it rarely disappoints. It’s not about the big pelagics here, though a whale shark does occasionally cruise by, giving everyone a shock. For us, Timur 1 is about the sheer density of staghorn coral. You drop in, and the reef just opens up into this sprawling, intricate garden of staghorn, as far as you can see. It feels ancient, undisturbed. The current is usually mild, letting you really drift and take in the scale of it all. We love looking for the tiny stuff here, too. Pygmy seahorses cling to the gorgonians, and the cheekscale dwarfgoby is always a delight to spot peeking out. Keep an eye out for the small giant clams tucked into the reef structure. This site is a photographer’s dream, especially if you’re into wide-angle shots of pristine coral landscapes or macro shots of those minute critters. It’s an easy, relaxing dive, perfect for lingering.
