Fish Sanctuary - Bohol

Sometimes a name really does say it all. Bohol’s Fish Sanctuary delivers exactly what you’d hope for: an absolute explosion of reef fish. We love this site not for dramatic walls or big pelagics, but for the sheer density of bustling, colourful life right there in front of you. Think schools of fusiliers so thick they momentarily block the sun, then part to reveal a flash of iridescent blue from a Blue-scaled wrasse. Our pick here is always the macro life, though. Spend time hovering over the coral patches and you’ll spot Common Dragonets dancing over the sand, Point-head maori wrasse darting between polyps, and if you’re lucky, a perfectly camouflaged Dwarf scorpionfish. Look closely and you might even catch a glimpse of an Eye-lash Harptail-Blenny peeking out from its hole. It's a busy, noisy place if you listen – the crackle of snapping shrimp is constant. We'd suggest a morning dive, if possible. The light is often better, and the reef feels a bit more awake before the mid-day boat traffic. Visibility can vary, but generally, you're looking at a pretty clear view of the action. It's perfect for photographers and anyone who loves to spend an entire dive just watching the endless drama of the reef unfold.
