Hilutungan Sanctuary - Bohol

Hilutungan Sanctuary, just off Bohol, is one of those sites we always make time for. It’s not about huge pelagics here; it's the sheer density of the reef fish that blows us away. Drop down and you're immediately enveloped in schools of fusiliers, their silver scales catching the light, almost thick enough to block out the sun. We love hovering at about 15 metres, watching the resident orbicular batfish cruise by with their serene, almost melancholic expressions. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too. We’ve spotted the elusive New Guinean anglerfish here a few times, tucked into crevices, perfectly camouflaged. The Banded Blenny is another favourite, always popping its head out of a hole, looking curious. Currents can pick up, so it's a good drift dive when they're running, carrying you past the dense coral bommies. We’d suggest going early in the morning, before the day boats crowd the mooring lines. It’s perfect for photographers and anyone who just loves to immerse themselves in a busy, thriving reef.
