Kat’s Kables - Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Middle Chute is one of those sites that just feels right from the moment you roll in. We love the gradual slope down to the wall, a series of sandy channels carving through the corals, which makes for a really dynamic entry. It’s not a deep dive, maxing out around 24 metres, but there's always something happening. Drift along the top of the reef, keeping an eye out for the big barrel sponges – they seem to host a constant party of cleaning stations. We often spot Sharpnose Pufferfish and Graysby getting a scrub. The wall itself is where we’ve seen turtles cruising by and occasionally a reef shark off in the blue, so keep one eye peeled outwards. Back on the reef, we’ve found channel clinging crabs tucked into crevices and big schools of Creole Wrasse just hanging out. Our favourite time to dive it is mid-morning, when the light plays beautifully through the sandy cuts. This is a great drift dive for anyone who appreciates a varied topography and a bit of a current to carry you along.
