Gothenburg Wreck - Coral Sea
The Gothenburg Wreck, out in the Coral Sea, is less about your typical colourful reef and more about history coming alive underwater. We always find ourselves drawn to it when we're in this part of Australia. It’s a proper ship graveyard, a steamer that went down back in 1875, and you can really feel that sense of age as you descend. The stern section is our favourite, often blanketed in orange soft corals, and you’ll typically spot resident reef sharks patrolling the deeper parts of the wreck. This isn’t a gentle drift dive. Currents can be tricky, so we'd suggest this one for advanced divers who are comfortable with potential surge and deeper profiles. We’ve seen immense schools of trevally here, swirling around the main deck plates, and we love peeking into the darker corners for lionfish or the occasional sleepy nurse shark. The sheer size of the wreck means you’ll want multiple dives to properly explore it. We always recommend trying to hit it around slack tide for the best visibility, otherwise, the sediment can really kick up.
