Holmes Reef

Holmes Reef isn't just another Coral Sea site; it’s an open-ocean adrenaline shot. We love the feeling of being truly out there, hundreds of kilometres from the coast, with nothing but deep blue below. The visibility here isn't just good, it's often ridiculous – we've had days where we could see the anchor chain disappear into a hazy 60-metre distance. This place is all about the pelagics. We’re talking silvertip sharks cruising the walls, occasionally a hammerhead ghosting by if you’re lucky and the thermocline is right. Keep an eye out for black marlin and swordfish in the blue; they’re not a daily guarantee but are a real possibility. The walls themselves are impressive, often dropping beyond 40 metres, plastered with staghorn coral that seems to glow in the clear water. It’s definitely a site for experienced divers comfortable with deep water and potentially strong currents, but the rewards are huge. Drop into the blue and the world feels impossibly vast, a true taste of the open ocean. You’ll spend most of your dive watching the drop-off for those big, shadowy shapes – a school of blackspot surgeonfish hugging the current, a curious bicolor cleaner wrasse investigating your mask, or a bold silvertip making a close pass. This is a site for divers who crave raw, untamed marine encounters and thrive on the unpredictable nature of the deep.
