With 154+ marine species recorded in the area - including hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, tiger sharks and napoleon wrasse - Ribbon Number Eight Reef offers some of Great Barrier Reef's richest reef diving. Water ranges 24-30°C, warmest January, February, March.
Ribbon Number Eight Reef is a solid dive, typical of the Outer Ribbons. We found the coral cover decent, with plenty of branching acropora providing shelter for smaller reef fish. Keep an eye out for pink anemonefish in their host anemones, they're always a photogenic subject. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a whale shark cruising by, though we’ve never been that fortunate here ourselves. It’s a good spot for a relaxed dive, nothing too dramatic, but consistently enjoyable for macro life and general reef ambiance.
