Clifton Gardens - Sydney & New South Wales

Clifton Gardens. Oh, Clifton Gardens. It's an absolute Sydney staple, and we love it for its sheer accessibility and the incredible amount of macro life you can find there. You pull up, gear up in the car park, and it's a super easy shore entry, just a short walk down to the sand. We’re not talking about deep walls or pelagic encounters here. This is a site where you slow right down, often crawling along the sand and rubble under the jetty, eyes peeled. That’s where you’ll spot everything from tiny seahorses clinging to bits of rope to the surprisingly chunky Meredith's Angelfish darting between the pylons. We’ve even seen Dusky sharks cruising through the shallows, which always makes for a heart-stopping moment. Visibility can be a bit variable, especially after rain, but on a good day, it’s a calm, bright exploration. The trick here is patience. We always suggest going at high tide for the best conditions and spending at least an hour just in the shallows. You’ll be amazed at the number of curious Threadfin Leatherjackets and those subtly patterned Narrowbanded Soles you’ll find camouflaged against the bottom. It’s a photographer’s dream and perfect for those who appreciate the small, often overlooked wonders of the ocean.
