Mareela Reef often gets overlooked for the flashier wrecks and deeper pinnacles around Sydney, but that’s a mistake. We love its particular brand of chaotic beauty, a sprawling coral system that feels more like a bustling marketplace than a tranquil reef. It’s got that vibrant, slightly unruly feel that only a healthy, shallower site can offer. What truly makes Mareela sing is the sheer density of life in its nooks and crannies. You’re not just seeing a Frogfish; you’re seeing three, tucked into different bommies, camouflaged perfectly against the sponges. Look for the Bluespotted Flathead settled on the sandy patches, and if you’re patient, a Cocky Gurnard might just put on a show of its pectoral fins. We’ve found the best time to visit is on an incoming tide, which often brings clearer water and a gentle push through the reef’s contours. It’s a cracker for macro enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys taking their time to really explore.
