MV Malabar - Sydney & New South Wales

The MV Malabar wreck holds a special place in our Sydney diving memories. We love heading out to this site, particularly on a calm day when the visibility stretches a bit further. It’s a proper historical wreck, the kind you can spend a whole dive exploring rather than just cruising past. Down at around 20 metres, the ship lies broken but still very recognisable, and the cold water has actually done a great job of preserving its structure over the decades. You'll spend most of your time here poking around the various sections. We always find ourselves drawn to the bow, where schools of yellowtail scad often swirl so thick they seem to block out the light. Look closely into the shadowy nooks and crannies – we’ve spotted wobbegongs tucked into the hull on more than one occasion, and the resident eastern blue groupers are always keen to check you out. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a current on occasion. Expect to feel that slight surge pushing you around the wreck, a constant reminder of the ocean's power. It’s a truly atmospheric dive, especially when the light filters down through the kelp.
