SS Duckenfield - Sydney & New South Wales

The SS Duckenfield, just off the coast, is a proper Sydney wreck dive. We love this site for its character – the ship sits upright, and you can still make out the bow, stern, and the general outline of its cargo holds. There’s a wonderful sense of history as you descend, seeing the steel skeleton emerge from the blue. It’s an excellent spot for photographers, especially with the way the light filters through the structure. Keep an eye out for the resident schooling fish, sometimes so thick they obscure parts of the wreck. We’ve often seen various leatherjackets poking around the superstructure, and the occasional Bluespotted Flathead camouflaged against the sand nearby. The current can pick up here, so we’d suggest timing your dive for slack tide to properly explore the length of the vessel and peer into the darker corners. If you’re comfortable with deeper wreck dives and enjoy exploring historical sites, the Duckenfield is a rewarding one.
