The Pipeline - Sydney & New South Wales

The Pipeline, just off Sydney’s northern beaches, is one of those sites we always circle back to. Forget the big boats and crowded spots; this is a shore dive, meaning a bit of a walk, but the payoff is worth it. We love dropping down into that kelp forest, watching it sway with the surge. It’s a completely different vibe than the city dives, more rugged, more wild. Down deep, around the 15-20 meter mark, you’re looking for the swim-throughs and overhangs carved into the rock. That’s where the magic happens. We’ve had some incredible encounters here, particularly with the Eastern king wrasse. They're not shy, often schooling up. Keep an eye out for Whitley's Gurnard Perch, too; they’re masters of camouflage, blending perfectly with the rocky bottom. Visibility can be a bit variable, especially after heavy rain, but on a good day, when the sun filters through the kelp, it’s just stunning. Our advice? Go at slack high tide for the easiest entry and exit, and you'll minimise the current. It suits divers who appreciate a bit of effort for a genuinely rewarding, uncrowded dive experience.
