Wreck of HMAS Australia - Sydney & New South Wales

The HMAS Australia wreck isn’t your typical accessible dive, but for those who manage the trip, it’s a real deep-water reward. We’re talking about a massive, proud battlecruiser sitting upright on the seabed, a proper ghost ship. Dropping down, you start to make out the sheer scale of it, and we love how the structure is still so intact, almost as if it’s waiting for its crew. Visibility can be a real crapshoot out here, but on a good day, the sight of those huge guns and the bridge structure emerging from the blue is incredible. You'll often find schooling kingfish circling the superstructure, and we’ve seen some massive Queensland groper lurking in the shadows of the engine room access points. Exploring the deck, you're looking for remnants of its past, and the sheer amount of history sinking into the sand is palpable. This one’s definitely for experienced wreck divers comfortable with deep profiles and a bit of planning. Our top tip? Go with a charter that knows the currents and can time the slack water just right. It makes all the difference.
