Wreck of Vergulde Draeck - Western Australia - South

Diving the Vergulde Draeck isn't your typical wreck dive. This is proper archaeology, less about intact structures and more about the ghosts of a 17th-century merchantman scattered across the seafloor. We're talking concreted ballast, cannon, anchors – the heavy stuff that endured the brutal impact of the reef back in 1656. The real thrill here is the historical context; picturing the ship's final moments, the survivors making it to shore. The site is exposed, so you'll want calm seas for the best experience, and it’s usually shallow enough that you get good ambient light filtering through. Our favourite moments are picking out the distinctive shapes of VOC bricks or shards of pottery, now encrusted and home to western blue groper and inquisitive wrasse. It’s a dive that rewards a slow, methodical approach, scanning the sand for the next clue from the past. Perfect for divers who appreciate history as much as marine life.
