Hesperus (Wreck) - Abaco

The Hesperus isn't a deep dive, sitting comfortably at 10 metres, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's not worth your time. We love this wreck for its accessibility and the sheer amount of life that's made it home. It's a wooden sailing ship, wrecked in 1893, and time has worn her down to a scattering of ribs and planks, now completely encrusted. You'll spend your time here weaving through the skeletal remains, spotting grunt and snapper sheltering in every crevice. Look closely, and you'll often find a shy moray eel peeking from beneath a collapsed timber. The light penetration is fantastic at this depth, painting the corals and sponges in bright, natural colours. It’s an ideal spot for new divers to get a feel for wreck diving without any overhead environments, and photographers will appreciate the soft, even light. Our favourite time to visit is mid-morning, when the sun is high, really illuminating the sand patches between the timbers.
