RIO DAMUJI - Isla de la Juventud
Rio Damuji, a sizable steamship, ran aground last summer and has since become a fixture of the Isla de la Juventud coastline. We’ve seen her hull slowly give way to the elements, particularly the port side, which is pretty battered. Despite the ongoing salvage work, the wreck itself is still impressive; nearly 100 meters long, even in just a meter of water, it offers a unique snorkel or very shallow dive. We like poking around the exposed superstructure and seeing how quickly damselfish and small wrasse have moved in among the twisted metal. It’s a great spot for photographers looking for an interesting subject that changes with every storm.
