Jackson Sunken Island - Bayahibe & La Romana

Jackson Sunken Island feels less like a wreck and more like a gentle, deliberate art installation. At a consistent 11 metres, it’s a brilliant introduction to wreck diving, especially for those who want to get up close without deep commitments. We love how the two large barges, sunk years ago, have broken up into sections, creating a series of swim-throughs and overhangs. You glide over the sand, then suddenly the dark outlines appear: rusted metal ribs and plates now completely covered in sponges and soft corals. Schools of sergeant majors often hover above, their yellow fins flashing as you approach. Look closer, and you’ll find juvenile drum fish tucked into crevices and moray eels peeking from the gloomier corners. Our favourite part is navigating through the larger barge's skeleton, where sunlight filters down, dappling the interior. It’s calm, often with minimal current, making it easy to spend a full dive exploring every nook and cranny. Perfect for photographers or anyone wanting a relaxed, immersive experience with a bit of history.
