Monica Wreck - Punta Cana

The Monica Wreck off Punta Cana isn't the biggest artificial reef out there, but we love it for its character. This old cargo ship, sunk intentionally in the 1960s, sits at around 12 metres, making it approachable for most certified divers. We usually find it’s a calm dive, good for getting comfortable with wreck penetration, though we always suggest good buoyancy control before you duck inside. What makes Monica special is how nature has draped itself over the metal. Schools of sergeant majors often swirl around the bow, and we’ve seen barracuda lurking in the deeper shadows near the stern. Our favourite part is navigating the cargo holds, where the light filters down through gaps in the deck plating, illuminating groupers and squirrelfish tucked into crevices. Take your time here; look closely into the nooks, and you might spot a moray eel peeking out or a curious crab scuttling across a beam. It’s a great spot for underwater photographers looking for that interplay of light and shadow on a structure.
