Malu’s Mermaid Retreat - Roatán

Paradiso, or Air Harbour as we tend to call it, isn’t your typical Gili dive. Forget the pretty coral gardens; this is a muck diver’s delight, and we love it for its quirks. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the soft, silty bottom – not glamorous, but keep your eyes peeled. This is the realm of the truly bizarre, a macro photographer’s dream. We’ve found frogfish here in every shade of brown and green, blending seamlessly with the discarded ropes and old tyres. Look closer at the seagrass beds, particularly around dusk, and you might just spot the elusive mandarin fish putting on its sunset show – a dazzling display of colour you won’t soon forget. It’s a shallow site, maxing out at 18 metres, making it perfect for long bottom times while you hunt for pipefish, seahorses, and all manner of tiny, fascinating critters. If you’re a diver who prefers the thrill of a discovery over a panoramic vista, Air Harbour is absolutely worth your time.
