Long Rock - Corn Islands

Overheat Reef, just off Sandy Bay, is one of those sites we always gravitate back to. We love it for its sheer range, especially for a shallower spot topping out around 20 metres. Drop in, and you’re often met with a gentle push, making it a dream for a relaxed drift. The sandy patch at 8 metres is where we usually spend our initial minutes, eyes scanning for the tiny stuff – Pallid Snake Eels poking out from the sand, those miniature Little Post Horn Squids hovering, and countless gobies darting into their burrows. Then you hit the wall, a lovely coral slope that invites you to take your time. Parrotfish crunch away at the reef, while closer inspection reveals Banded Blennies perched on coral heads, eyeing you with a bit of sass. We’ve spotted Chalk Bass tucked into crevices and, if you’re lucky and really looking, a Saddle Stargazer buried in the sand, just its eyes peeking out. The visibility here is reliably good, often 20 metres plus, making it a fantastic spot for photographers who like to hunt for macro life and enjoy a bit of a current.
