Winslow Reef - Rarotonga

Osprey. Now, that's a name we love to drop. This isn't your average GBR dive, not by a long shot. We're talking proper open ocean stuff, hundreds of kilometres from Cairns, often meaning liveaboard only. But trust us, the effort is worth it. The main draw here is the sheer drama of the place. Walls that drop straight down into the abyss, sometimes we feel like we're flying off the edge of the world. Expect serious pelagic action – we've seen everything from schooling hammerheads gliding past in the blue to oceanic whitetips making confident, close passes. The reef itself, though, doesn't get enough credit. The staghorn coral formations are immense, almost architectural, and we've spent entire safety stops just watching the Charcoal Damsels flit between the branches. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too; the Flasher Scorpionfish here are particularly colourful. Currents can rip, so this is for experienced divers who are comfortable in moving water and enjoy the thrill of a drift. It's an adrenaline dive, but with plenty of beauty to soak in too.
