FUJISAN MARU - Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon

The Fujisan Maru is one of those wrecks that just makes you stop and stare. She’s a big one, a tanker, 150 metres long, sitting upright in about 40 metres. What we love about her is how intact she is, even after all these years. Drop down the stern and you’ll find the props still there, massive things, completely encrusted with sponges. Our favourite spot has to be the bow. There’s a cargo hold forward, usually full of light when the sun’s high, and inside you can still see stacks of sake bottles, maybe a few cases of beer too – eerie to think about the last time anyone handled them. Further along, the bridge structure is flattened but we often find grey reef sharks cruising over it, almost like they’re patrolling. The sheer size of her is impressive, but it’s the smaller details, the glass bottles, the way the light filters through the holds, that really get you. We’d suggest saving this dive for mid-morning; the sun angle really brings out the colours on the corals that have started to grow on the superstructure. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and don’t mind a bit of depth.
