Yubai Maru - Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon

The Yubai Maru is a standout wreck in Chuuk Lagoon, less talked about than some of the bigger names but just as rewarding, in our opinion. We always make a point of diving it. She’s a smaller freighter, sitting upright, and that compact nature makes for a really intimate exploration. You can get a sense of the whole ship in a single dive, something that’s harder on the colossal supply vessels. What we love here is the cargo. The hold is full of Sake bottles, still intact, stacked like they were yesterday. It’s an incredible, poignant detail. Down in the engine room, the machinery is surprisingly well-preserved, and we’ve often found lionfish hovering near the gauges, almost observing us. The decks are covered in soft corals, purple and green, with schools of fusiliers moving like liquid silver around the mast. It’s usually a relaxed dive, good for photographers keen on details, and ideal for those looking to spend quality time with a smaller piece of history. Visibility is generally excellent, making the penetration into the holds feel comfortable and safe.
