With 428+ marine species recorded in the area - including bull sharks, manta rays, mobula rays (devil rays), seahorses and sea turtles - Manta Ray Scramble offers some of Ishigaki & Yaeyama's richest diving. Water ranges 23-30°C, warmest July, August, September.
Manta Ray Scramble, just off Ishigaki, is exactly what it sounds like – a bit of a scrum to see mantas. We’re talking shallow, around 16m, which is fantastic for beginners. You’ll typically hang out on a sandy patch, often with a few other boats, waiting for these giants to cruise by for a clean. It’s a cleaning station, so patience is key, but when they show up, they’re usually unbothered by divers, circling for a good long look. Best hit early in the morning to beat some of the crowds.
