With 309+ marine species recorded in the area - including barracuda, blue-spotted stingrays, oceanic whitetip sharks, sea turtles and sperm whales - Shangani Reef offers some of Quirimbas Archipelago's richest reef diving. Water ranges 26-30°C, warmest February, March, December.
Shangani Reef is a great introduction to Quirimbas diving. At a consistent 17 meters, it’s a mellow dive, perfect for those getting comfortable in the Indian Ocean. We’ve drifted over sandy patches where whiprays bury themselves, then onto low-lying reef structures housing moray eels and shy lionfish. Keep an eye out for colourful nudibranchs on the coral bommies; they’re often overlooked but always worth a closer look. It’s a comfortable, easy dive, usually with gentle currents, making it ideal for newer divers or a relaxing second tank.
