Why dive here
With 269+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales and great white sharks - MV Gemsbok offers some of Cape Town & Western Cape's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 14-16°C, warmest February, March, April.
The MV Gemsbok sits upright, a proper ghost ship on the seabed, and one of our favorite deeper Cape Town wrecks. Dropping onto the bridge at 18 meters, you can follow the superstructure down to the sand at 30 meters, the whole thing just begging to be explored. We usually find inquisitive octopus tucked into nooks and crannies, and there are always schools of hottentot and strepies darting through the holds. It's a solid dive for anyone comfortable with a bit of depth and keen to poke around a proper ship.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 15°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
