Why dive here
With 269+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales and great white sharks - STANLEY D offers some of Cape Town & Western Cape's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 14-16°C, warmest February, March, April.
The Stanley D sits shallow, barely 4 metres deep, right off the coast. This old fishing trawler, sunk back in '76, drifted ashore after a snagged net crippled her propeller. Now, she's broken up quite a bit, but you can still pick out pieces of the hull and superstructure scattered across the sand. We usually find small octopus tucked into the crevices, and sometimes a shy cuttlefish darts past. It’s a nice, easy dive for a sunny afternoon, good for a relaxed explore, especially if you’re into the history of these old working boats.
