CASSIUS HUDSON (PROBABLY) - Istria Peninsula

The Cassius Hudson, or what we’re pretty sure is the Cassius Hudson, offers a genuinely different kind of wreck dive in Istria. It sits upright, mostly intact, in just 16 metres, making it approachable for most divers. We love poking around the bow, where the anchor chain still drapes, and the stern, which has started to collapse in on itself, creating these fantastic little swim-throughs for cautious explorers. What you find here isn't about big pelagics; it's the smaller stuff. Schools of juvenile damselfish shimmer over the superstructure, and if you look closely amongst the twisted metal, you'll spot scorpionfish perfectly camouflaged. We often find conger eels peering from dark recesses, their eyes following you as you pass. The light penetration at this depth is just beautiful, painting the wreck in shades of blue and green, especially on a sunny afternoon. For photographers, the soft light and the wreck’s skeletal structure create some really evocative shots. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration, letting you soak in the history and the marine life making a home out of steel.
