CAVOUR - Istria Peninsula

The Cavour wreck is a real treat, especially for divers who appreciate a good story with their dive. It’s a shallow site, only 11 meters deep, which means longer bottom times and plenty of light filtering down onto the old steamship. We really love how accessible it is, making it a great option for newer wreck divers or anyone looking for a relaxed, atmospheric dive. You’ll find the Cavour lying on its port side, pretty well broken up by time and the sea, but still very much recognisable as a ship. We always enjoy tracing the outline of the hull, spotting parts of the superstructure, and imagining it in its prime. It’s been down there long enough for the structure to become a home for all sorts of critters. Look closely and you’ll spot scorpionfish tucked into crevices, small schools of glinting damselfish darting amongst the metal, and often a grumpy octopus eyeing you from a shaded nook. Our favourite part has to be the play of light through the shallower sections, illuminating the rust-coloured metal and the marine growth in a really magical way. If you can time your dive for late morning, when the sun is a bit higher, the visibility can be exceptional and the colours really pop.
