DON JUAN - Istria Peninsula

Don Juan, off Istria's coast, isn't your typical deep-blue wreck. It's an accessible wreck, sitting pretty at just 11 metres, making it perfect for divers who prefer shallower profiles. We love how the light plays on the wooden hull, scattered across the seafloor after its dramatic end in 1944. You can see the ribs of the ship, mostly broken up, but still clearly a wreck, not just a pile of debris. This is a great spot for an extended bottom time, allowing you to really soak it all in. Look closely and you'll spot scuttling crabs, small blennies tucked into crevices, and schools of juvenile fish darting through the timbers. Our favourite time to dive Don Juan is on a sunny morning, when the visibility is at its best and the colours of the sponges growing on the wreck really pop. It’s not about huge pelagics here, it’s about the quiet intimacy of a historical site slowly being reclaimed by the sea, and the smaller critters that call it home.
