El Hawi Star Wrack - Istria Peninsula

The El Hawi Star wreck sits upright, remarkably intact, a proper ghost ship on the seabed. We love how the bow points north, still looking like it’s headed somewhere, even after all these years. Drop down and you’ll find sections that are surprisingly open, offering swim-throughs into the cargo holds – just watch your buoyancy, the silt can kick up easily in there. Our favourite spot is usually around the stern, where you often see schools of Bullet Mackerel flitting past, and we’ve spotted good-sized moray eels tucked into the darker crevices. Keep an eye on the sandy areas nearby too; Atlantic stargazers like to bury themselves there, only their eyes poking out. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and the way the sea reclaims things, making a new home for species like Sand Steenbras and occasional Common Eagle Rays gliding by. It’s not a super deep dive, but the potential for exploration makes it rewarding.
