Giuseppe Dezza - Istria Peninsula

The Giuseppe Dezza wreck isn’t just a pile of metal at 32 metres, it’s a proper dive into history. This Italian torpedo boat destroyer, sunk in 1944, sits upright and largely intact, which we always appreciate. Descending, you first make out the bow, then the stern, the whole ship settling into view. It’s an intermediate dive, no major currents usually, but the depth means your bottom time is limited. What we really love is how explorable it is. You can peer into the bridge, swim along the deck where the torpedo tubes used to be, and imagine the crew on board. The superstructure is particularly interesting, a skeletal frame now home to plenty of scorpionfish tucked into crevices and schools of small pelagics flickering around the mast. The light penetration through the Mediterranean blue is often fantastic, highlighting the rust colours and the details of the ship. We'd suggest aiming for a morning dive; the visibility tends to be at its best before any afternoon boat traffic stirs things up. It’s a contemplative wreck, best suited for those who appreciate history and a good, solid ship to explore, rather than just zooming past a jumble of debris.
