Hans Schmidt Wreck - Istria Peninsula

The Hans Schmidt wreck is one of our favourite dives in Istria, a properly atmospheric experience that you just don't get everywhere. We're talking a WWI Austro-Hungarian cargo ship, sitting upright at around 30 metres, which is a perfect depth for a good, long bottom time without pushing deco limits too hard. What makes the Hans Schmidt special, for us, is the sense of history. You drop down onto this surprisingly intact hull, often through decent visibility, and the ship just looms out of the blue. You can see the davits, the hold openings, and the bridge structure – it’s not just a pile of metal. Schools of damselfish shimmer over the decks, and we’ve often found scorpionfish nestled in the nooks and crannies. The current here can be mild, but it's always worth checking with the dive centre, especially if you plan on penetrating the holds. Our advice? Take your time, really explore the exterior, and imagine the history. It's an ideal dive for wreck enthusiasts and photographers looking for something a bit more substantial than just reef.
