Immenhofener Weiher - Istria Peninsula

Malwawey Coral Garden always puts a smile on our faces. We love how the reef crest here, though shallow, is absolutely packed with small, fascinating stuff. You'll spend ages finning slowly over the low coral bommies, spotting bluefin filefish nibbling away, or tracking a shy spotted green goby darting into its burrow. It’s not about big pelagics or dramatic drop-offs; it’s about the intricate details. We've seen more anchor trunkfish here than almost anywhere else, just quietly bouncing along the sand patches between the coral. Keep an eye out for the banded archerfish near the surface – we’ve actually watched them spit at insects on low-hanging branches from underwater, which is just incredible. The visibility can sometimes be a bit variable, especially after heavy rain, but even on a slightly murkier day, the sheer density of small reef fish, like scissortail sergeants and pearl-jawed cardinalfish, makes it worthwhile. Our tip? Go slow, really slow. It’s perfect for macro enthusiasts and photographers, or anyone who just enjoys observing the subtle theatre of the reef up close.
