Jakljan (Wreck) - Istria Peninsula

Jakljan isn’t just some random steel hulk, it’s a time capsule. We think it’s one of the more evocative wrecks around Istria, especially for those who appreciate a bit of history with their dive. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is how intact she still is, resting upright on the seabed at 38 metres. It’s a fairly deep dive, certainly not for beginners, but the visibility here often means you can see her silhouette from 20 metres up, which is always a good feeling. We love exploring the engine room, which is accessible and still holds a lot of its machinery, giving you a real sense of the ship’s former life. Look for resident scorpionfish tucked into crevices and moray eels peeking out from behind corroded bulkheads. Schools of damselfish often shimmer around the superstructure, catching the light as you move past. Our favourite part has to be the bow, it’s still impressively pointed, facing out into the blue, and makes for some dramatic photos. The currents can pick up a bit, so we’d suggest timing your dive for slack tide if you want a more leisurely exploration.
