Landungssteg Aesch - Istria Peninsula

Reef Patch is one of those sites we always circle on the map when we’re planning a trip back to Kiritimati. It’s not about dramatic drop-offs or big pelagics here; this is pure, unadulterated coral gazing, a gentle drift over a shallow, buzzing ecosystem. We usually hit it mid-morning, when the sun's high and the light really pops off the brain corals and the dense thickets of branching acropora. The first thing you’ll notice is the sheer volume of smaller fish. Schools of Bristle-toothed Surgeonfish are everywhere, moving like a single, silver organism. Then you start picking out the individuals: the vivid Orange-lined Triggerfish, the inquisitive Redfin Butterflyfish darting in and out, and those grumpy-looking Bullethead Parrotfish munching away on the reef. Keep an eye out for the Lamarck's Porcelain Crabs clinging to anemones – they’re tiny but truly mesmerising. We've often found a couple of the Enigmatic Morays peeking from crevices, too. It’s a site that rewards patience and a keen eye, perfect for photographers or anyone who just wants to slow down and truly absorb a reef.
