Lopper Acheregg - Istria Peninsula

Ufutama is one of those Kerama sites we always try to hit, especially when the light is just right. It’s not about huge pelagics here, though you might catch a passing remora if you’re lucky. Instead, Ufutama shines with its incredible hard coral formations. We love drifting over the massive fields of staghorn and pore corals, some of them stretching for what feels like acres. Look closely, and you’ll spot the little speckled-fin rockcods tucked into crevices or a blacklined filefish picking at polyps. The best time to dive Ufutama is mid-morning, when the sun penetrates the water at an angle, making the blue-green chromis glitter as they dart between the coral branches. It’s a gentle drift, usually, making it perfect for photographers who want time to compose shots of the huge brain corals or the delicate sebae anemones. If you’re into macro, keep an eye out for nudibranchs on the encrusting corals; they’re often overlooked amidst the grandeur. For us, Ufutama is about appreciating the sheer scale and health of the Kerama reefs.
