M.L. 558 - Istria Peninsula

The M.L. 558 is a peculiar wreck, often overlooked for Istria's bigger names, but we think it’s a real treat. This British motor launch went down in 1945, reportedly mined. It sits upright at 32 metres, surprisingly intact. Our favourite part is navigating the superstructure; you can really get a feel for its original layout. The wheelhouse is especially atmospheric, with light filtering through the open spaces, casting long shadows. Inside, you’ll often find conger eels coiled up, their heads peeking out, watching you pass. Around the deck, schools of damselfish flit amongst the rusting metal, and we’ve seen some decent scorpionfish camouflaged on the hull. It’s not a coral garden by any stretch, but the marine growth clinging to the metalwork is fascinating. We'd suggest aiming for a calm day; while the wreck itself isn’t deep, the visibility can shift. It’s a great site for divers who appreciate history and a bit of exploration without strong currents.
