PAGURO - Istria Peninsula

Paguro isn’t just a wreck; it’s a monument to a dramatic event, and that history still hums around the structure. Sunk in 1965 after a blowout and fire, this former jack-up oil rig lies upright at 23 metres, its massive, skeletal form dominating the seabed. We love how the sheer scale hits you as you descend, the three huge legs reaching skyward, covered in soft corals and sponges. You’ll spend most of your dive exploring the intricate network of beams and platforms, each section now home to different residents. Expect to find schools of shimmering damselfish darting between the girders, nudibranchs slowly making their way across the rusty metal, and moray eels peeking from shadowy crevices. We often spot scorpionfish perfectly camouflaged against the growth, so keep a sharp eye out. The light filters down beautifully through the superstructure, creating an ethereal glow around the wreck. This site is a photographer’s dream and a fantastic dive for anyone who appreciates a wreck with a story. It’s also relatively shallow, making it accessible for advanced open water divers looking for a substantial wreck experience without extreme depths. We’d suggest a slow, deliberate exploration, giving yourself time to soak in the atmosphere and observe the smaller life that thrives here.
